What is Roots and Shoots?

1) What is roots and shoots?

Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots is a programme of the Jane Goodall Institute. The programme is about making positive change happen for people, for animals and for the environment. The Roots & Shoots network connects youths of all ages who share a desire to create a better world, with young people identifying problems in their communities and taking action. Through service projects, youth-led campaigns and an interactive website, Roots & Shoots members are making a difference across the globe.

2) Why should we focus on the children and not on the adults? Surely its more the adults who are causing the issues in the world?
The programme focuses on youths rather than adults because it is important to start educating and raising awareness with children as they are the ones who will be taking the increasingly important role of fixing all the problems that their parents and grandparents have inflicted on the planet. Youths are seen as the future generations whose mentality and beliefs can still be moulded to do what is right. roots_and_shoots_logo
3) What is your favourite roots and shoots programme in Malaysia?
Gosh! There are plenty of amazing projects to choose from. If I had to pick one, it

has to be the Endangered Animals Project that was inspired by Ecoteer Roots & Shoots from SK Pulau Perhentian Primary School. What I particularly like about this Roots & Shoots programme is that it collaborates and engages the island’s young people get to learn first hand about the range of different topics that are effecting their community. Plus, this project was also chosen by our Global Roots & Shoots Office as the Project of the Month for April 2016!

Dr. Jane Goodall and Roots & Shoots members plant trees at the Singapore American School in Singapore.
